The 2nd Level Master in Data Science and Statistical Learning (MD2SL) is promoted by the Florence Center for Data Science, through the Department of Statistics, Computer Science, Applications “G. Parenti” (DISIA) of the University of Florence and the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.

The master MD2SL aims to equip professionals with extensive theoretical knowledge of more advanced statistical, IT and computational tools, allowing them to use and critically evaluate the potential of different methods to extract information from the increasing amount of data available in diverse application areas, with particular reference to applications in the economic, business and health sectors, to provide research questions and foster innovation.

The second edition of the Master will officially begin with a Kick-Off Meeting on February 1, 2022, at 4:30 pm, reserved for enrolled students, during which the Master's program and the organization of the educational activities will be presented. The meeting will provide an opportunity for mutual presentations by students, teachers and representatives of partner institutions.

Data scientist possessing:

  1. a deep theoretical knowledge of advanced statistical and computer science methods;

  2. an applied knowledge of the different tools of data science;

3. the ability to effectively communicate with subjects without a technical background in data science.

In particular, the master course provides the methodological tools to future data-driven decision makers in the fields of economics, business and health sciences.

Professional Abilities

At the end of the program, participants will have acquired:

  • a knowledge of the most advanced methods of statistics, computer science, engineering and artificial intelligence;

  • the ability to collect relevant data;

  • the ability to structure, clean and analyze large data sources;

  • the ability to organize, analyze and evaluate results to support decision-making processes;

  • strong communication and visualization skills.

Career Opportunities

  • As data analyst in the public and private sectors: pharmaceutical, banking, energy, finance, and insurance companies, research centers, international organizations, public administrations, hospitals, local authorities, etc.

  • PhD programs in line with the topics covered, both in Italy and abroad.

course of study

The master MD2SL comprises three distinct teaching blocks and a data science lab:

I - Data Science Bootcamp

Provides a solid knowledge on the foundations of Data Science:

  • Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science

  • Algorithmic Foundations and Programming Skills

II - Core Courses

Provide theoretical and practical skills in Data Science and Data Analytics:

  • Statistical Learning for Data Science

  • Supervised and Unsupervised Learning

  • Complex Systems

  • Decision Theory for Data Science

  • Ethics and law for Data Science

III - Elective Courses

Provide specific skills in the fields of economics and business or health and medical science, organized in three possible tracks:

  1. Data Science for Economics

  2. Data Science for Business

  3. Data Science for Health

Internship

At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to put the acquired knowledge into practice through a 225-hour internship at one of the public or private companies, research centers and units, or local authorities that are partners of the master's program.

The master's program includes:

  • 400 hours of lectures (including workshops and testimonials from industry experts)

  • 18 hours of seminars

  • 225 hours of internship

  • attendance of at least 75% of the total number of hours

Schedule

Lectures and seminars will take place onsite, online or in blended mode, according to the evolution of the epidemiological emergency from Covid-19, for 16 hours/week, including Saturdays. More details about the course schedule will be available soon.

Locations

On-site teaching activities take place at:

  • Department of Statistics, Computer Science, Applications "G. Parenti" - viale Morgagni, 59 - Florence

  • Morgagni Learning Center - viale Morgagni, 40 - Florence

  • IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca - piazza S. Francesco, 19 - Lucca

Duration

  • 12 months (February 2022 - January 2023).

  • Classes are scheduled to start on 1 February 2022, during the academic year 2021/2022.

2022/2023 admissions

The master course includes a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 participants.

Important Dates and Deadlines

  • 15 November 2022 - 12:30 pm: online application submission deadline

  • TBD: online selection interview in English

  • 12 December 2022: publication of the list of selected candidates

  • 11 January 2022 - 12:30 pm: deadline for enrollment

  • MD2SL enrollment fee: € 4,500 (in two installments) - Individual module registration fee: € 100/CFU.
