The master program aims at developing well-rounded professional figures, data scientists, able to provide answers to the emerging research questions arising from the pervasive presence of complex, unstructured, and high-dimensional data (the so-called big data), in a variety of application fields.
This objective is achieved through the acquisition of solid theoretical and practical skills in the field of statistics, mathematics, and programming, which can be employed in private companies and public administrations, as well as to support decision-making processes in public and private organizations. Specifically, the MD2SL program aims to bring graduates in quantitative disciplines to a higher level thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of Data Science.
At the end of the program, students will be able to collect, structure, clean, and analyze complex, unstructured and high-dimensional data. They will be able to identify the relevant information, as well as develop innovative methodological and computational solutions for data collection and analysis. This will allow them to to address emerging information needs and support decision-making processes in the medical/health or economic/business fields. Students will also develop strong communication skills, which are essential for adequate and effective dissemination of results to subjects without a technical background in data science.
The resulting professional profile can find employment in different fields such as public administrations and local authorities, data analysis units of medium and large enterprises, insurance companies, marketing offices of production and distribution companies, research centers, and consulting firms.
Furthermore, thanks to the solid theoretical foundations acquired during the program, students will be ready to access doctoral programs related to the topics covered, in Italy and abroad.
By integrating the methodologies of statistics, mathematics, and computer science, Data Science is establishing itself as a fundamental discipline to extrapolate information from data and provide answers to relevant research questions in contemporary societies. Thanks to the powerful tools on which it is based, Data Science plays a central role in all those areas in which big-data are becoming increasingly relevant, including economics, medicine, engineering, education, social sciences, etc.
